Żminijietna – Voice of the Left is highly concerned with the developing situation on ACTA in Europe. The reality is that this treaty was signed by 22 European countries almost secretly without giving chance to the people and the European Parliament to discuss this matter. The European Union is at a crossroad with regards greater participation of civil society on EU matters. This is leading to a Europe of the powerful, where the right of the people to voice their concern is being obscured.

International organisation Oxfam stated that ACTA, threatens developing countries in accessing low priced generic medicines. This will mean that poor people will be denied legitimate and life-saving generic medicines. This goes against the spirit of the European Union to help poor countries develop. If the Maltese government believes in real democracy and in social justice, the ACTA treaty should be rejected. Europe should enforce the present European legislation with regards to counterfeit products and piracy.  

On the other hand, Żminijietna believes that a more united Europe is the way forward, and this can only be achieved if the European Union gives more say to the people in referenda, on such issues. Many people were denied the right to express themselves in other referenda, such as when the European Treaty was being introduced across Europe, while others who voted against, were forced to accept it through a parliamentary vote.

It is also interesting to note that several important European member states, among them Germany, Cyprus and Poland are having second thoughts about ACTA, its legality and its effectiveness.
